Kommentar

Subject: On 19 January 2024 the German federal parliament passed a major reform of citizenship law which, if accepted by the federal council, will make it much easier for immigrants to become German citizens. In her public statements the minister responsible, Nancy Faeser, has repeatedly made it clear that the reform should be understood as a measure designed to promote the integration of immigrants and their descendants living in Germany today. Program: We will take the changes in German citizenship law as a starting point for an analysis of integration in its political, cultural, economic and other social aspects. We will focus in particular on the meaning of integration with regard to language, work, education and religion. We will study the legacy of German history as it relates to integration in order to better appreciate the context of current public debate. Among other questions we will discuss: In what sense is integration about equality? How does cultural integration compare to assimilation and multiculturalism? What is the connection between integration and democracy, and how should German governments respond to concerns about immigration and integration among German voters today? Schließen
