Even after several years of secondary school English learning, students may still experience difficulties in putting grammar to use correctly and effectively. This course aims at addressing and remedying these difficulties. A review of the relationship between meaning and form is provided in essential areas of English grammar such as tense, the perfect and progressive aspects, the modal verbs, expressions of future time, and the article system. This review is followed by intensive practice in the use of grammatical structures to express meaning in a variety of contexts. |

This course is intended primarily for students of Anglistik. The model of pronunciation used is British English RP (Received Pronunciation). Students who have adopted other models for their pronunciation may usefully take the course, however. By the end of the course, students will have been given a basic introduction to the phonology of English, and learned to use a transcription system for the sounds of (British) English. Coursework will consist of descriptions of aspects of the English sound system followed by practical work, exercises in the laboratory, ear training, listen and repeat etc. There will be an (optional) exam offered towards the end of the course (covering aspects of theory, transcription and pronunciation) and for those students who take the exam a graded Schein will be issued. |

The main aim of the course is to make students aware of the many variables interacting in the translation process. Part of the work will be in-class exploration of groups of sample sentences illustrating the contribution of contrastive grammar, but the emphasis will be on at-home translation of full texts, focusing on the translation of meaning, literary as well as collocative and connotative, in context. Half of the translations will be in the field of literature, putting particular weight on text coherence and style, and the other half will be on topics like education which involve thorough analysis of the cultural backgrounds of both the source text and the target text. Students will be strongly encouraged to use dictionaries, monolingual and bilingual, at home, in class and in the exam. The exam will last 90 minutes and students will be given the choice between two texts, one of each type. |
